Submission Routes

Submission Routes

There are three main routes to submission.

  • For minor domestic alterations, a Building Notice allows work to begin without formal plans.
  • For more substantial changes—extensions, new builds, commercial premises, schools, or changes of use—a Full Plans Application is required. This involves producing and submitting detailed plans for approval.
  • If work has already been carried out without building regulations consent, a Regularisation
  • Certificate is needed. This retrospective route requires inspection of the existing work and may involve opening up parts of the structure to verify compliance.
  • Private inspectors rarely accept retrospective cases, so these must be processed through your local authority.
